"Then I shall die as one of them!"
Dear Blog Diary,
You know what people don’t talk about enough? How badass Aragorn is throughout the entire Lords of the Rings trilogy.
Paraphrasing, Tolkien said that the true hero of the story is Sam. Sam would be the hero because of his resilience to the ring, never feeding into its power showing his lack of greed, selfishness, etc. This is true simply because that ring would never have been destroyed without Sam. Sam puts Kevin Costner from the Body Guard to shame. Sam was basically the loyalest friend since we saw Wilson befriending Tom Hanks on a beach…ok…bad example (you cried).
Aragorn though, is the driving force behind that fellowship. The number of times that man saved Frodo and the gang is almost the same as his kill count. Aragorn has street cred with the elves. He’s Gandalf’s trusted guide to Frodo.
Most of all he is the beacon of light for the future which was displayed so clearly at the end of Return of the King when he says to the hobbits “you bow to no one.” It’s specifically because he is the king, a man of power, that he has the opportunity to rule as all of the corrupt kings before him but he chooses to acknowledge the lowest of creatures to stand above all. I do give credit to heroic individuals, but it speaks volumes when you actually have power and you use it with virtue.
Plus he’s got a badass nick name like Stryder.
Best regards,
Eric
