World cup 2026
Dear Blog Diary,
Every four years, I tell myself “I’m really going to care this time” and every four years, I just don’t give a shit about World Cup.
Frankly though, this year I did watch the second half of USA’s knock out rounds and the second half of the final, but let’s be honest with ourselves. I don’t care.
I’d say that the sport is a bit too complex for me. A good touch is a good touch, attacking percentage, control — these things I understand but the nuance of the game is lost on me. However I do acknowledge how cool the World Cup is. I think it’s the idea that it only happens every four years, the entire world’s best, the grand spectacle. It really is cool, but I’m never gunna do that.
I feel the same way about D&D. You and your homies making up stories and characters, building a world. In my mind, I always want a sidekick animal character that is D&D Kuma. Thing is, to my understanding it just keeps going. It’s not like a game anyone can win. You just play.
In this, yes it is cool as hell but I have zero interest. Get weird but I’m never gunna do that.
Same goes for F1.
I think F1 is so damn cool because sure the drivers are diva centers of attention but the engineers are the real rock stars. I have to imagine that the richest people in the world are into it. The spectacle of it and how it’s maybe the furthest sport from the common everyday working man or woman. F1 is foreign to us Americans but I think we relate to it culturally just from the boldness of the sport.
All the things, but you get the theme here: Eric just don’t give a shit.
I find myself fascinated with the F1 movie though. Always going to love Brad Pitt.
Here’s what I’ve come to believe:
The F1 movie is the very best example of “tell, don’t show.”
That’s right. Usually it’s “show, don’t tell.” The F1 movie breaks this rule the whole film, because the truth is, we the audience have no fucking clue how the sport actually works. We just think you drive fast on curvy roads in some multi-million-dollar machine.
The car in the beginning of the movie is labeled the “shit box” which is really all we need to know. They don’t go into what’s truly wrong with the car, because in reality we don’t know shit about the cars, or the tires, or the specifics that make it faster. We just know when there is the dramatic problem later in the movie, Javier Bardem lets us the audience know that they have to race with the “shit box” instead of the new and improved car.
The movie tells you what is happening and then “ahh the shitbox! I know what’s going on now!” When in reality, we have no idea.
The commentator of the race in the movie spoon feeds us every detail we need to know to enjoy the drama of F1. The sound of it is how you would watch the race live, but the reality is, we don’t know shit about what’s going on so the movie fixes that problem in the most obvious way.
Every detail catered to our ignorance. And it is so damn cool, but I’m not gunna do that shit.
Just don’t care. You only have so much bandwidth.
Funny thing is that when I think of World Cup, D&D, F1 — I really do appreciate the beauty. Each in their own way and it’s fascinating.
Just because I don’t care about a thing doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate its splendor.
The reality is the damn near everything in your life, you will be the only one that truly cares. Everybody’s just trying to get by, live their life as best at they can. But sometimes, even though someone doesn’t care, doesn’t mean that they don’t appreciate it.
They just might need for you to explain it for them.
Best,
Eric
