God I miss Jack Nicholason Part 2
Dear Blog Diary,
“Acting is everybody’s favorite second job.” - Jack Nicholson
I say my favorite actor is Jack Nicholson, mostly because of As Good As it Gets. Shining still gives me nightmares. I will forever love that in The Departed, Jack is the only one who doesn’t use a Boston accent.
In truth, my favorite actor is Brad Pitt. Just go off of track record! Fight Club, Se7en, Ocean’s 11, Ben Button...list goes on. I love his movies and yes I love watching that man eat.
The same could be said for my favorite actress, Kate Winslet, but in truth…Tilda Swinton. I ADORE her in every role she takes and the subtle, profound, immersively intriguing performances she gives provoke something in me.
Akira Kurosawa, but it’s really Wes Anderson. Then, let's be honest...David Fincher.
The root is that there’s something I identify with Jack, Kate, and Kurosawa that is very personal and for that, they are my favorite. I suppose it depends on the definition of “favorite.”
Worthwhile question – is admitting that my preferences have changed such a bad thing? We identify with things so passionately and at times, to change is to change who we are. Is that such a bad thing either? Would the world stop turning if we let go of this image of ourselves?
To all of those who are so sure of themselves on a topic, is it possible to change your opinion on that subject? No shame being so partisan as long as you’re aware of it. It would take an act of god to get me to eat sushi with cream cheese. I’ll die on that hill.
You know that Japanese print with Fuji in the background, The Great Wave by Hokusai? He did a series of 36 “views of Fuji”. The Great Wave is just the most famous one. He did that when he was 71 and most of his famous works into his 80s.
It was his belief that a person’s work truly begins at 70. Towards the end of our lives is the best we can get at knowing ourselves, thus, in our youth we’re just figuring it out. What we do at the end of life is what we truly mean to do because it’s who we really are.
However people change, love them. When they show you who they are, believe them.
They're not acting, even though they are.
Best,
E
