Words
Dear Blog Diary,
Friends of mine have an eight year old. He’s learning words and I just think it’s important that he knows what they mean.
I asked him, “what’s the difference between an asshole and a dick?” I didn’t teach him those. He explained the anatomy.
“But what does that mean? Is it bad to be a penis?”
No answers. Partially because it would entertain me, I told him to ask his mom the difference between a dick and an asshole.
She thought I taught him a joke. Nono, he’s literally asking his mom contextually what’s the difference, not in a literal sense or as a joke with a punchline.
Nuance.
Words are like that. That’s my point.
Popular words come and go. You notice how people respond with “oof”?
Ironically some words I call asshole words. Crass is an asshole word. Old fashioned snooty word to express crude behavior.
In the hot seat of being asshole words: pernicious, mimetic, nefarious.
Interesting how they’re all adjectives, so you can judge behavior.
My current favorite: performative.
Yes I’m going to defend men. Somebody gotta do it.
The performative man, because you don’t hear women getting called that.
Always double standards. An insulting man is an asshole. An insulting woman is a bitch. A coward man is a bitch. A coward woman, we don’t have a word for that.
Note, 94% of red pillers are “delulu.”
Performative translates to “being inauthentic and thus have an agenda in how you want people to view or think of you.”
Next layer is that you’re insecure of who you are and have to perform.
Heard it across the board.
Men reading in public is performative, apparently. Kindness. Supporting women too much or in a way that makes other people wonder if he’s doing it for his own benefit…performative.
There’s a Jack Nicholson story where he was talking to a director in a heated argument and essentially said, “you ARE someone who can talk to me like that but if you do, it’s gunna turn me off.”
Words have technical definition and then the sentiment we express. We use words as fashion and I truly don’t think people stop to think of what they mean.
And if I have misused any words, did you think to ask what I mean?
Best,
E
