Sushi Confidential: Hills
Sushi Confidential
The way I was explained, the soy wrap for rolls was started to appease Americans when sushi first came to the US. They weren’t accustomed to nori (seaweed).
We’ve never had the soy stuff on the menu. The old man said that it tastes like shit, especially when the product was first introduced, but it is getting better.
We received a sample so I had to try.
Certain hills my teacher will die on. I think it’s funny how one of them is fried rice.
This is something he eats and enjoys. I really do think it’s from too many times over the decades, some sweet redneck comes into the restaurant thinking it’s Chinese food and orders fried rice without even looking at the menu. I remember one lady asked me to put jalapeños and mango on top of a roll.
Quick sidebar: going off menu isn’t 100% tacky but yeahhh. It is.
I’ll always revert back to “it’s your food, what do I care?” In this case, someone made the menu. If you want XYZ whatever, make it yourself.
I admit that I prefer nori, but I’ll eat the soy stuff.
I suppose you just have to decide what hills you’ll die on.
Best,
E
