August 1st, twenty twenty five
Dear Blog Diary,
It’s not always easy but I’ve been really trying to embody this one:
“You don’t know me well enough to think I’m an asshole and I don’t know you well enough to care.”
It’s always in my nature to care. Never want to be one more reason for someone to feel shitty or pessimistic.
Last Friday I was at the gym, and realized August 1 was the start of the weekend and the first of the month. “Ignition” by R Kelly and “1st of Da Month” by Bone Thugs. It made me chuckle.
R Kelly is a great example of “can you separate the person from the art?”
I believe I can fly. I’m the world’s greatest. The storm is indeed over hallelujah. I am certainly not seeing nothing wrong! Songs that uplift the spirit at times.
But yeah he did some fucked up shit. Morally reprehensible shit. Disgusting.
Ya know what I have always found incredibly endearing about Bone Thugs N Harmony?
They never talk bad about women.
Thuggish ruggish bone, crossroads, whatever your favorite Bone Thugs song is, give them a deeper listen. Never hear them talking bitch hoes XYZ etc etc.
In fact, they clarify in the song “Bitch iz a Bitch” with the hook:
“Ladies we just ain’t talking about you, cause some of yall (word that starts with N) is bitches too.” They clarify that it’s not about gender.
In the song “she got crazy” they talk about how they want a simple non chaotic life, they don’t want a woman to kill them, and in the process of that I am hearing a lot about consent, transparency, respect for your partner, and a bit about love.
But Bone Thugs do talk about thug shit too. Almost reminds me of Omar from The Wire.
Sometimes people talk a big game but are really pieces of shit, as surprising as that may be.
I prefer the one who acknowledges their shortcomings and imperfections while holding high ethical standards, whether you agree with those standards or not.
Think I’m pretty good at that one. I fail all the time but I always try to be better.
“You don’t know me well enough to think I’m an asshole and I don’t know you well enough to care.”
I’m working on that one.
Best,
E
