The Movies of Music
Dear Blog Diary,
It’s wildly fascinating to me how movie scores can embody a thing in your mind with a few bars. Music in movies used to really move me.
Jurassic Park.
Are you picturing the helicopter flying over the island? T-rex or brontosaurus? The music embodies imagination itself and ultimately asks what will our species do as we become closer and closer to gods.
Home Alone
Picturing Kevin hugging his mom? The house? I would argue it’s the only iconic movie score from a Christmas movie. When you hear it, it’s whatever feeling Christmas feels like for you. I hope for most of us, it’s love and cheer.
Pirates of the Caribbean
Captain Jack? The director’s credits giving a clean cut end of the film? For me, it’s adventure. When you hear the movie score, I deeply ask if I am exploring life and chasing my own horizons.
Harry Potter
The boats with the kids on their way to Hogwarts? The Harry Potter opening title? Magic. Harry Potter reminds me of how it felt to believe in things that aren’t real.
Lord of the Rings
Probably Gandalf. That movie score is so vital to what LOTR was, just like everything in it was, and that’s kind of the point. You hear it and instantly there is an entire world in front of you that was built in a guy’s mind.
Star Wars
Whole score is just one complete banger. What do you want me to say? This diary entry is already super long.
I think there are arguments to be made for Back to the Future, Jaws, The Magnificent Seven, Forrest Gump, and Indiana Jones.
I also find it wildly fascinating that in my life, the thing that embodies love would be my dog Kuma…
…and she does it in silence.
Best regards,
E
